Living with earthquakes has become a way of life for many Chileans, but an earthquake registering 6.7 on the Richter scale is never normal.
At 5:17 EST, the earthquake hit in the Pacific off the coast of Chile, between Arica, and Iquique.
According to Chile’s Oficina Nacional de Emergencia del Ministerio del Interior (ONEMI), more than 100 thousand Chileans have been evacuated from the coastline as a precaution against a potential tsunami created by the quake.
In February, 2010, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit off the southern coast of Chile, resulting in 525 dead, and 25 missing, and estimated losses to Chile’s economy of US$15–30 billion.
