Chilean airline LAN Airlines S.A. is a national institution, founded March 5, 1929.
The airline is one of the most recognizable brands in Chile, and from 1994 to 2010, the majority shareholder was Chile’s sitting president, Sebastián Piñera (he made good on campaign promised to sell his interests to avoid any conflicts of interest while in office).
Now, the airline has crossed the Andes to merge with TAM based out of São Paulo, Brazil. Founded in 1976, TAM was Brazil’s largest airline, and the largest airline in Latin America in its own right before the merger.
As of the completion of the merger on June 22nd, the conglomerate will offer flights to 150 destinations in 22 countries.
The group now represents the largest carrier on the continent, and will be headquartered in Santiago Chile.
